Exploring the poetry of everyday life

Haiku: Brief Run

Summer lingered still
Not yet ready to depart
Autumn knocked on door

Robed in finery
Fiery red, soft apricot
Jack Frost-designed leaves

Wind sent them a-twirl
Beauty carpets patio
Winter’s on the way

Haiku: Wall Flowers

Summer music stilled
Fragrant breezes play no more
Patio stones cold

People gone inside
Chairs wait for another year
Stacked against the fence

Clearing Fog

Clear darkness of the sky
Last night a quarter moon
Summer creatures sing a serenade

At dawn a fog rolls in
Only light the yellow beam
Shining from the hardware store

Blue water of the swimming pool
Now obscured for winter months
By tarpaulin just as blue

I welcome the change
Summer a hard and anxious time
Fear for health of son’s beloved wife

With now the worst behind
As a family they move on
Life reshaped but ever closer drawn

I return to simpler ways
Where poetry lives in daily life
And remains my nourishment

Passages

Summertime six years ago
I settled in this space
Unpacked and put my memories
On walls and table tops
In places I found evidence
Of occupant who came before
Tiny holes in closet door
Suggest a place to hang his ties
Apartment life is transitory
I put roots down none the less
Created my new home.

These past six years began a tale
Chapters of unexpected change
So many things I used to do
No longer are within my reach
My apartment is the same
It is I who have a different view
I will re-member cherished gifts
Grieve and lay them to the side
Look out the window at the tree
Watch pink clouds at early dawn
Embrace anew life’s mystery.
