Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte

Empty Pool Full Hearts

We sat socially distant beside the pool
Now drained and dressed in its blue winter tarp
Pool’s water once present now disappeared
Like the beloved woman who died this past year
Whom the Greenbriar family gathered to remember

Pat was our mentor, house mother and friend
Offering resources for solving dilemmas
Giving hugs when needed and sharing news
The stories we shared revealed how we loved her
This woman our rock and our joy

Our stories told also another tale
Pictured a community Pat helped form and enrich
People helping neighbors, exchanging smiles
Welcoming newcomers, sharing wonderful meals
A rich legacy Pat bequeathed us

Small Miracles in Covid Times

A rainy, gloomy day
Confined by social distancing
Feeling very much alone
I reached out to Margie
Who comes here once a month
To help with my house cleaning

She is coming here tomorrow
Now I have a task to do
Cardboard boxes from Amazon
Quarantining in my bath tub
Need breaking down
Cheering me with useful work

A second joy brightened me
Grandson James soon college bound
Texted me an invitation
Supper out and conversation
Wonderful way to say goodbye
We’re going Tuesday night

Good things come in threes they say
While washing dishes after lunch
Playing favorite old CD’s
I heard All The Things You Are
And traveled back to my teen years
Chills and goosebumps still intact

Stories From My Kitchen Sink

As I look at my sink
Dishes stacked to be washed
Remind me of days long gone by
Each one tells me a story
A heart-warming moment its gift

Blue glass Starbuck’s mug
Harks back to first son
Long conversations we shared
While his baby son in car carrier slept
Mug greets my mornings today

The crinkly green juice glass
Sole remainder of set
Marks when I was pregnant
With son number two
Now I use it to take morning pills

Little brown bowl rounded out a set
For meals many years later shared
By third son a school teacher
And me living alone
Holidays celebrated in style

Saying Goodbye

Belle died at noon on Saturday
She left in peace with family around
Her ninety-seven years a testament
To life well lived and loved.
A friend to us who knew her well
She left a vacancy not soon filled

This morning the swimming pool is blue
Sun and fair skies foretell a lovely day.
Belle loved the pool in Summer
And sunning on the patio in Autumn
When falling leaves transformed the color scheme
Before Winter sent Belle back inside.

We played our Scrabble-like word game Royalty
By the pool or in the Party Room upstairs
Belle was the queen who beat us all
At forming words some of her own creation
She seemed to pull letters out of nowhere
To fashion words sometimes bizarre.

Belle is gone and yet I see her everywhere
Dressed in her Thriftique classy clothes
Speaking out to bring justice to the world
Celebrating Seder with generations of her family
Including us as her adopted relatives
Teaching us the ropes to vote absentee

Belle has been freed from suffering.
It was a grief to see her bowed so low
My heart rises remembering the wonder
Of the very special person that Belle was
Now living on in vibrant memories.
I did not know loss could produce such gain.

Haiku: Yin and Yang of Memory

Memories cherished
Flowing deep gentle waters
Snag on hidden rocks.
