Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte

Coronovirus Hijinks

The High Tech Pool Company is putting in a new swimming pool for my apartment building. Keeping up with their daily progress is one of the things I do while I am socially distancing myself.

Today I saw that the workers had put up a tent – the fancy square kind with a triangular top – in the empty shallow end of the pool and were eating lunch. I haven’t seen this before. But the clock said noon so what else would they be doing?

Haiku: Jade Plant Journey

Five foot high jade plant
Grows old in my barber’s shop
Fertile ancestor

Customers like me
Modern Johnny Appleseeds
Take cuttings to root

Mine grew strong and tall
Reaching for the bright sunlight
Then it took a bow

Quite ungainly now
It required a scissor’s trim
Made jade feel at home

Deja Vu

I never guessed to find
At my age the Youthful Fountain
In a “Life Long Learning” class

Our program is to study
The art of Michelangelo
Freeing life from marble

We began like kindergarteners
With expectant faces seated
Around two tables set up end-to-end

Newsprint was spread before us
And then we all were given
A block of soap and tiny knife

Our instruction was to carve
Whatever we desired
Like Michelangelo, oh dear!

The last assignment and the best
Round the table as we sculpted
We told something of ourselves

I could do without the learning
And spend our class-time weekly
Carving soap and telling stories

Futuristic Cart Washing

I set out for the grocery
Gray clouds were like lead
Till I rounded the corner
And saw something ahead
In front of the building
Grocery carts stood in line
Dutifully waiting, but for what?

Parked by the curb
Was a long white truck
Underneath streams of water
Flowed down toward the street
Engine noises most rattling
Unsettled my ears
What can this be?

Oh, I thought gleefully
Here’s something new
They put carts in the truck
And push them right through
A canyon with showers
Spraying dirt off with speed
A travelling cart-wash indeed.

My delight was short-lived
When I spied the fat hose
Attached to the truck
Prosaically spraying
The assembled carts
In the model of itinerant
Carpet cleaners.

Written in response to the Daily Prompt: Droll
