Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte

Happy Birthday in Hard Times

Raise your sails high
But don’t pull up anchor
Keep dreaming and planning
This can’t last forever

Keep flow in your life
Laugh, enjoy your friends
Family spirit enfolds you
With love and uplifting

Amazing new things
Bloom in our culture
Hard times’ bestow change
Endurance conquers

Rejoice in small moments
Taste your good cooking
Connections are precious
Zoom where you will

I love you, Bobby
You’re so dear to me
Stay safe and healthy
Until good times roll

For my grandson on his twenty-first birthday

Haiku: James – A Revelation

At age five or six
Curiosity took hold
Drove you to explore

Everything fair game
You created ways to play
Drove me to despair

AHA moment struck
Finally I saw revealed
Genius in you

Mysteries to me
Your knowledge of how things work
Produced summer job

James, I’m proud of you
College years begin next fall
New things to explore

Intersections

You’re starting off on a brand-new decade
Charting your path along your own lines
Finding your way to the world that awaits you
Charged with energy, confidence and faith
Your family behind you as your new journey begins

I remember well the first time I met you
Wrapped in a red blanket I think still exists
My role as grandmother began in that moment
I had my learning to do just like you
As time went by we taught one another

When you took me to lunch a few weeks ago
You asked my advice on where we should eat
We agreed on a restaurant and were on our way
Only not in the direction that I remembered
I was quite lost but deferred to you

When we arrived it was the same restaurant
But a different location from the one I suggested
I had not realized that it was a chain
Though our minds worked together toward a common goal
I thought time might be upon us to change place as leaders

Written on the occasion of my grandson’s twentieth birthday

Post Graduate Learning

Formerly I learned a lot
Traveling my wisest teacher
Newer lessons bid me stay
Listen to my changing body
Adventure seemed activity
Ready for the rubbish pile
Until on stage appeared two grandsons

Brothers with licenses to drive
Full of who they plan to be
What journeys focused in their sights
Which college lessons are required
Still loving Grandma Ina
Last week extended invitations
Offered me new inspiration

First the eldest set a date
Asked my advice where we should lunch
Entered address in GPA and off we went
But not by any route I knew
Arrived at restaurant in same chain
(I didn’t know there was a chain)
My grandson turned my old to new

His brother next made plans with me
Knocked on door at time we set
Walked right in with plastic bag
Filled with ingredients to cook
Eggs Benedict tradition shared
Between us two before
He even washed the dishes

Reminded me of new and old
Ever present combination
Creating new originals
Gumbo promise for future-time
Seasoned with love and memory
Dreams and hope for generations
And altogether possible

Happy 17th Birthday

We’re at it again
My dear grandson, James
We’ll cook and enjoy
Our Eggs Benedict
I’ll catch up on your news
And share some of mine
We’ll bask in the warmth
Of this special time
We’ll look forward to Mexico
Our Thanksgiving fling
A last family hurrah
We’ll remember it well
As we travel ahead
To your next birthday

On The Occasion of James’ Sixteenth Birthday

Joyous celebration of life in your very being
A spark of creation I hold dear
Making me proud
Energy abundant
Strutting in the Marching Band

Helping me fix Eggs Benedict
Always fun to be with
Running to give me a surprise hug
Tuesday in the parking lot

I LOVE YOU
