My apartment building’s intent
Is to be where folk age in place
We covenant to have each other’s back
And enjoy our golden years in peace
An accoutrement worn by most
Is a bracelet-cum-alarm device
That sends out a call to the EMS squad
If its owner suffers a fall
I am an odd-person-out
This bracelet does not suit my style
Reminder of what might possibly be
Cramps the notion I want to live free
Then an accident occurred
Someone fell and could not get back up
Wearing no bracelet she could not call for help
And remained on the floor several days (She’s O.K.)
My son hearing about her dire fate
Questioned where I keep my cellphone
I said “Home in a drawer.” He replied
“Well, you should wear it around your neck.”
Hearing my objections he had an idea.
“Mom, how about getting Alexa?
Then if you fall she can send out the call
And EMS will come out and get ya’.”
Aging I Am an Original Poetry

Temperatures warm
Stubborn leaves on trees still green
Summer flowers bloom
Autumn will arrive
Splendid colors flaming bright
In her own good time

I never guessed to find
At my age the Youthful Fountain
In a “Life Long Learning” class
Our program is to study
The art of Michelangelo
Freeing life from marble
We began like kindergarteners
With expectant faces seated
Around two tables set up end-to-end
Newsprint was spread before us
And then we all were given
A block of soap and tiny knife
Our instruction was to carve
Whatever we desired
Like Michelangelo, oh dear!
The last assignment and the best
Round the table as we sculpted
We told something of ourselves
I could do without the learning
And spend our class-time weekly
Carving soap and telling stories

Clear darkness of the sky
Last night a quarter moon
Summer creatures sing a serenade
At dawn a fog rolls in
Only light the yellow beam
Shining from the hardware store
Blue water of the swimming pool
Now obscured for winter months
By tarpaulin just as blue
I welcome the change
Summer a hard and anxious time
Fear for health of son’s beloved wife
With now the worst behind
As a family they move on
Life reshaped but ever closer drawn
I return to simpler ways
Where poetry lives in daily life
And remains my nourishment

To look at my present as possible past
Daunting endeavor, confusing at best
Then Aha! moment furnished direction
Live in the now! where else?
Standing in line at a ballyhooed art show
On my feet two hours at least
Energized by engagement I realized
My cane and I can go miles before rest
A present rich with much possibility
Brand new exploration if I open my eyes
Reach for new challenges from creative grab bag
Open doors not extensions of past
With curiosity checked-out travel offerings
Searching for something I had missed before
Discovered adventures focused on interests
Not only the aging seek learning in classrooms
And so next September I head for New Hampshire
To learn and to listen to sizzling Cool Jazz
Taking first step toward reimagination
Living into new perspectives on life

When first I began posting crone chronicles
Enriched by Word Press 101 prompts
I sat at my computer catching ready-made stories
Tumbling from a lifetime of rich memories
Lovely to go back and re-member the past
Seems as if now life around me is changing
Much new is good, much more terrifying
Past seems an irrelevant line drawn in the sand
The who I was then needs refurbishment
What I live and write now creates past for my future
