Sometimes everything has to be enscribed across the heavens so you can find the one line already written inside you. Sometimes it takes a great sky to find that small, bright, and indescribable wedge of freedom in your own heart. David Whyte

Friends Along the Way

on July 25, 2014

I’ve never had just one best friend.
One single person to companion life’s long way.

Faces and moments of connection deep
Lodge rich in memory.
We shared awakenings, transformations, transitions,
And then moved on to be another’s muse.

Times when silence said it all,
Or tears and laughter spoke the words required.
Glances between strangers
Healed, acknowledged human need.

A closest friend would be a lovely thing.
For now I’ll travel on my gypsy way.

  1. Thank you for sharing. As I look back, I have had many friends but, as I age, being in the space of a best friend lessened. Right now, my longest best friend relation is my husband of 54 years who has been a friend since I was 12-years-old.

How gifted you are! Had no idea you wrote poetry and prose. Love it. I also realize how the people close to me are dying away. Thankful to have had friendships with great memories. I am hoping for new friend or two since I am now able to be up and out.

  3. You are wonderful with words. It makes me think about the meaning of friendship. Do we have to choose a favourite friend?
